The Cultural, Entrepreneurial, and Civic Enhancement of Latent Spaces in Romania

The publication was created as part of the project “Capitalizing on Abandoned Spaces for the Development of Local Ecotourism,” carried out by MKBT between July 2022 and August 2023, with funding from the Romanian-American Foundation (RAF). We explored and documented the enormous potential of the abandoned built heritage in seven ecotourism destinations in Romania: Transylvanian Highlands (Brașov, Sibiu, Mureș), Pădurea Craiului (Bihor), Țara Hațegului – Retezat (Hunedoara), Eco Maramureș (Maramureș), Țara Dornelor (Suceava), Ținutul Zimbrilor – Neamț (Neamț), and Băile Tușnad and Surroundings (Harghita). This endeavor contributed to the broader “Development of Ecotourism Destinations in Romania” program, developed by RAF together with Fundatia pentru Parteneriat and the Association for Ecotourism in Romania.

We will regularly update the content as we document other cases of abandoned and animated heritage in Romania.
